One of my favorite activities outside of school is playing basketball in my club Eintracht Frankfurt. I have practices four times a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The practices last from one and a half hour to two hours depending on the day. In addition to this, I have one to two games on the weekend and a number of different tournaments throughout the year.
My biggest strength while playing basketball is most likely my physique and speed. This is because it allows me to be extremely physical while playing with other players making me an exceptional rebounder and a good driver. Additionally, I think that I am good at communicating with my team and maintaining friendly relationships amongst all the player's in the club. The aspects of my game I think I could improve on is definitely my shooting skills, my discipline, and my decision making while in a basketball game. The way in which I could improve these aspects of my game is by committing more time and mind to them in practice.
Basketball is an ever developing sport, this is especially true as one moves up the age groups. We can see this by the many players that change their positions due to either their lack of skill at playing one position or simply due to their lack of height. I believe that I will soon be reaching such a point, as I believe that I am not longer tall enough to play the four position in the NBBL due to the extreme amount of competition that exists there. Therefore my goal for the next year is to firstly improve all of the previous weaknesses I listed above and secondly to change my position for a four to a three which will make my height more fitting to my position. This means that I am destined to encounter a huge amount of challenges due to the fact that I will have to hugely alter my play style from this year to the next, suggesting that I will have to develop a set of totally new skills, such as better ball handling and developing a better game sense on and off the ball.
My role in this activity is to play as a four position for the team Eintracht Frankfurt. I have prepared for this through the countless hours I have put in the gym throughout my whole life. My ultimate goal this year is to win the German national championship, which will take place on the twenty-seventh of May in Nuremberg. My team and I plan to achieve this by utilizing the knowledge and skills we have acquired throughout the course of this year and by applying it during the final four tournament. Throughout our road to the German top four, we have experienced many setbacks, the biggest one being the injury of our starting five point guard without whom we had great difficulties winning some of our games in the quarterfinal tournament stage. However, due to our team effort and commitment, we managed to beat every team at that tournament and maintain our perfect streak. Another setback that we have yet to experience is the lack of our trainer during the German top four tournament due to a certain obligation to his wife. Nevertheless, I am confident that we will be able to overcome this problem together with our team and our assistant coach.
Basketball is a sport based around teamwork and therefore is requires extremely good communication and chemistry amongst each and every player on the team. This is because on defense the defending team has to communicate amongst themselves in order to identify specific plays, picks, and switches throughout the game. Not only that but the coach is also constantly shouting suggestions and information that are meant to help us win the game. I think that the working relationship between our team is extremely good. I am saying this on the basis of my past experience, as I have played in three different clubs throughout my basketball career and Eintracht Frankfurt's chemistry easily the best I've ever experienced. However, once in a while when a conflict does arise it is never big and we usually just laugh it off.
The most difficult aspect about committing to this activity is the amount of time that it takes from my daily schedule, including weekends. This means that I have a limited amount of time to study for school. Not only this but sometimes when I have tournaments during the weekends I have to stay home to rest after a weekend of nonstop physical exercise and to catch up on school work. However, I overcame this struggle by increasing the quality of my time management skills and of my work quality. These skills allowed me to save precious time and ultimately allows me to maintain a high quality of grades while at the same time committing a large amount of my time to basketball.
Basketball has impacted my life in a huge way. It allowed me to develop my time management and social skills, which I found extremely useful in both my academic and social life. Improving my time management has freed up time for me to do the things I like, such as going out with friends or playing more basketball as I no longer have to spend so much time studying, and improving my social skills allowed me to boom the social environments of my school and club.
Basketball is a game based on decisions. Like in anything in life, there are good decisions, and there are bad ones. One of the bad decisions I made during this basketball season was provoking other players to start a fight with. I did this in order to get into their heads to decrease their ability to play their best game, and although the benefits of this can be seen immediately, I have come to the conclusion that this is the wrong thing to do. Not only due to the possible fouls that my team could get but also due to the level of incompetence I exhibited while doing so. For this reason, I chose to become less aggressive in the way I approach other players during my games, however, this does not mean I will change my physical style of gameplay.
In conclusion, I think that this year's basketball season was a great success not only due to our uninterrupted win streak but also due to the skills I have acquired and the social contacts I have gained. However, if I were to improve one aspect of this year performance it would definitely be better decision making during basketball games, at this would allow me to become a better team player and therefore become more beneficial to my team.
