After having quit playing for the Eintracht basketball team due to a lack of motivation and satisfaction I decided to pick up rugby. Here I play in the varsity boys rugby team in FIS. I have practice 3 times a week and usually 2 games on the weekends. The purpose of the rugby season is to develop as a team throughout the winter season and ultimately play for the ISST championship.
In rugby I find myself to be extremely fit due to my previous exposure to basketball. This allows me to gain a competitive advantage over those participating only in winter season sports. Furthermore, I believe I am relatively fast for my height and weight thus making me a good addition to the team. However, there are also certain aspects of my game that I could improve in rugby. This refers especially to skill-based activities because as a new player only playing rugby for a month or two I lack certain habits that could make me a better player. Therefore, if I could improve on anything during the rugby season I would choose for it to be my skills with the ball and my decision making.
I am totally new to this sport thus even undertaking to participate in the team proved for me to be a challenge. As a player who has never played before I had to go out of my way to understand the game in a more in-depth manner and focus more intently on the details of the game while in practice. Furthermore, transitioning from a relatively contact-free sport such as basketball to a sport such as a rugby in which contact is necessary I found that I have been needing to go to the gym to increase my strength and reduce the risk of injury. All of these factors listed above are almost totally new to me and thus proved to be a challenge.
My role in the rugby team is to be a hard-working competitor on the field and a king for the rugby team. A king is a position assigned by the rugby coaches and signifies that I and a group of other kings are responsible for organizing social events that are meant to bring the team closer together. In order to prepare for my games so that I can act as a competitor, I prepare myself both mentally and physically before every game in order to guarantee that I do the best I possibly can. I do this by starting to think about the game before it even begins thus bringing me into the appropriate mindset.
Rugby being a team sport requires a lot of teamwork to be successful. Throughout the course of the current rugby season, I have worked with every single of my teammates in order to increase both my and their skills during practice and games. I find that in this rugby team the working relationship between all members of the team are extremely good and even when conflicts do arise they are taken care of extremely fast. The way this is done is by simply talking it out amongst the team, this usually results in the provoker of the conflict being silenced.
The most difficult thing about committing to FIS varsity rugby was the time commitment that is required. Being in the 12th grade I require a lot of time to study and prepare for the final exams, rugby being in the winter season takes away from that time. I managed to overcome this difficulty by making sacrifices to my free time and opting to go to practice rather than go and hang out with friends.
Rugby has impacted my life in a big way. Firstly, it has changed the sport I wish to pursue in the future, secondly, it has allowed me to meet and integrate myself deeper into the FIS society thanks to playing on an active school team, and lastly, it allows me to keep myself fit and take my mind of school once in a while, which has proven to be very stress relieving.
With more exposure to the sport, I have developed better decision-making skills, which can translate into real life as making fast and accurate decisions is necessary for any profession. Furthermore, I am slowly improving my passing and kicking skills and although I am not at the level I would want to be I am aware the developing new skills takes time and patience.
