The goal of this project is to provide a "how to" tutorial about performing exercises in a correct manner and showing of general body strength exercises. The video is aimed to be viewed by student-athletes at FIS before, during, and after their sports seasons, to build and maintain their body strength. My group and I have been meeting weekly over the course of two months in order to research, plan, and make the tutorial.
As an old basketball player and now a current rugby player I have been going to the gym for a very long time now. As a result, I have become relatively good at doing gym exercises with proper technique and I also possess a good amount of knowledge about the possible drawbacks of performing certain exercises with improper technique. If I could improve on anything during this CAS project it would be my filming skills. As a person who has never been especially interested in the film I lacked skills that wouldn't allow for such a standard of the film if I did not have my group with me, thus this is a skill I would wish to improve.
Throughout this group project, I have had to operate the camera much more than I usually do in real life. I have also had to look into in-depth information about exercises. Although this group project did not offer any particular challenge in regards to skills, it did come at a big time commitment. A lot of time had to be dedicated to choosing the right exercises for the film, furthermore many times my group and I went to the gym to film and some sort of complications held us back, thus forcing us to sacrifice yet another couple hours from our weekend.
My role in this activity was to act, film, and instruct on how to perform the exercises. In order to prepare for this, I had to learn all the important technicalities that are important to avoid injury for each exercise and decide upon the camera angles we use in the film before the filming process. I did this by researching and planning beforehand so that once we got into the filming everything would go smoothly. We experienced a number of setbacks from our own fault such as forgetting to charge the camera before the photo shoot and once we filmed during a busy day in the gym that resulted in too much back noise in the video forcing us to re-film. In order to deal with this, we just stuck to the plan and continued on the next weekend.
In this CAS group project I worked with Pep and originally Maxim, however, he got asked to leave the school leaving Pep and me in a two-person group. Being good friends with Pep I found the working relationship in our collaboration to be extremely good with no conflict ever arising once Maxim left.
The most difficult part about committing to this exercise is the time commitment it requires from our IB study time. This leads to me having less time to study for my IB subjects. Furthermore, the fact that Maxim and our multiple setbacks increased the amount of time we had to commit to this project. In order to deal with the issue of time commitment, I attempted to manage my time more efficiently by planning our my weekends more precisely and thus wasting less time.
Although this exercise does not have a huge impact on the world it does offer the FIS community a video that could potentially prevent many injuries by offering simple technique advice that could be implemented into the work out a schedule of anybody in FIS. This project also allowed me to study more intently each of the 12 exercises we chose to do in our video, thus giving me more precise information about the small quirks that can be made to improve the exercises impact on the body.
This group project allowed me to develop my knowledge about 12 of the gym exercises we performed in our video and also allowed me to improve my skills with the camera.
