Polish school has never been an activity I especially enjoyed, however, I have always found it extremely beneficial during my returns to Poland when I needed to text and talk to my polish friends and family. The lessons take place at my house through Skype on every Sunday at nine o'clock to ten o'clock. The purpose of this lesson is to improve my grammar while writing in Polish as well as gain background historical knowledge about Poland.
The skills I learned to use very well during polish school are discipline, commitment, organization. Polish being one of the hardest languages to learn and even harder to master means that these skills are necessary to the continuous development of my proficient in this language. An aspect on which I could improve however is staying focused during my lessons. I have a problem with this due to the fact that the lessons are on Skype, this means that I lack the teacher, student contact which results in a faster loss of concentration.
Although polish is by no means a new language for me it still poses me with many difficult problems due to the extremely large amount of conjugations that exist within polish. Due to the sheer amount of tenses, conjugations, and rules that the polish language has even native speakers such as me struggle in speaking the language in a correct fashion. This means that although I have not been presented with any new problems I would be unaware of, I continuously struggle with the complexity of the polish language.
My role in this activity is to study polish in an online polish school. The lessons take place on Skype with an old teacher of mine, with whom I've had lessons in Finland with. In order to prepare for each consecutive lesson I do all the homework that was given to me from the past lesson, and I read about the subject of the next lesson. Once the lesson starts we discuss the homework and the subject I have read about as my homework assignment. We then do a short introduction to the next unit and then the teacher concludes the lesson by giving me a new piece of homework, as well as a home reading assignment for the next lesson. This takes approximately 1 hour to complete. Throughout the course of this year, we have experienced many setbacks due to my frequent basketball game schedule I was sometimes unable to attend the Sunday lessons meaning that if these lessons could not be made up during the weekdays, I would be unable to meet that week.
This project did not feature any group work due to the fact that the lessons were purely individual, however, the working relationship with my teacher is extremely good. This is because I think she understands the situation I am in related to basketball and she is understanding about it. Additionally, the fact that we have known each other since the time I have lived in Helsinki adds to our mutual ability to work well with each other.
The most difficult part about committing to this activity is time. This is because this activity takes place every weekend on Sunday, a day I would usually spend either revising for my tests on Monday or playing basketball for my team. This means that the addition of another activity is not that easy. However, I quite enjoy taking polish lessons as I find them quite informative therefore I do not find it a huge problem for me to sacrifice some time.
To conclude, I believe that this activity will be extremely beneficial for me in the future as it will allow me to better communicate with people that speak polish as their native tongue, such as multiple members of my family or my polish friends. If I were to improve one aspect of my performance in this activity it would definitely be my focus during some of the lessons as taking lessons through Skype reduces the student, teacher contact allowing my mind to wander into areas such as basketball or the school work I have to do after the lesson.
